Torah Stolen from Jerusalem Synagogue on Rosh Hashannah

A Torah scroll was stolen on Tuesday, the second day of Rosh Hashannah, from the central synagogue of the Erlau hassidic movement in the Katamon neighborhood of Jerusalem, according to the Hamevasser hareidi daily. The theft was discovered when the sextons of the synagogue went to return the scroll from a special holy ark that had been set up in a special room for a youth service to accomodate children who had come from around the country.

The movement's executive director said he felt the thieves acted during the night when nobody was around and hope that video from security cameras will help find the thieves. The movement put out the word about the theft so that people will be suspicious of any Torah scroll that is offered for sale.
