Pope Expected in Lebanon Friday Afternoon

Pope Benedict XVI is scheduled to arrive in Lebanon, Friday afternoon, for a two-day visit. During his stay, the pontiff is expected to meet with the United Nations and Arab League envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi in an attempt to promote a peaceful solution to the crisis between President Bashar Al-Assad and opposition forces.

Against the backdrop of the civil war in Syria and anti-American violence in the Arab world, the pope also intends to call for peace in the region and emphasize the unity between the various Christian churches in the Middle East.
