Jerusalem Piyyut Festival Celebrates Holy Music

The 2012 Piyyut Festival is taking place this week until September 13th. Sponsored by the Beit Avi Chai, the festival is showcasing Jewish Middle Eastern and Sephardic musical prayer traditions.
One performance featured Orphaned Land, an Israeli metal band. They performed together with Yememite singer Yehudit Levi and American-born multi-instrumentalist RebbeSoul.
Another performance combined traditional Jewish prayers from Afghanistan with classical Indian music. Other shows featured various traditional stringed instruments such as the saz.
