Yad Vashem Chairman Named to Auschwitz Advisory Council

Prime Minister Donald Trusk of Poland appointed Chairman Avner Shalev of Jerusalem's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial institution to one of the two vice-chairman positions on the Auschwitz International Council, which advises the Polish government on the preservation and functioning of the memorial site at Auschwitz and other World War II death camps in Poland. The other vice chair is Polish historian Barbara Engelking. Former Polish foreign minister Władysława Bartoszewski is the current chairman.

Following his appointment, Shalev said, "As time goes on, challenges in the preservation of the authentic sites where the murder took place are increasing, especially in light of the desire they will be used as a tool to perpetuate the Holocaust and its education and for the designing of Holocaust memory in future generations."
