Egyptian military sources denied, Tuesday morning, a report by Israel Defense Forces Radio that former defense minister Hussein Tantawi was not just replaced by President Mohammed Morsi but forced to leave as a result by an internal coup by subordinates in the Egyptian army. The IDF Radio report cited Western diplomatic sources. The Egyptians claim the report "was baseless and its aim was to sow confusion on the Egyptian street."
Middle East Online quoted a judicial source on Monday as saying 30 complaints have been filed against Tantawi, accusing him of suppressing the uprising that led to the fall of former president Hosni Mubarak. An additional complaint alleges illegal acquistion of land near Cairo.
