Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told Russian officials Monday that he would resign willingly, if the Syrian people chose someone else as their leader in elections. Sources in Russia told French media that Assad's regime was currently stable.

The sources said that Russia had proposed a major summit that would bring together all groups in Syria- rebel and opposition – together for talks.
