In an interview with Israel Radio, U.S. Ambassador Dan Shapiro said that Al Qaeda had been significantly weakened in the past year. Speaking on the eleventh anniversary of the terror group's attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Shapiro said that the group had not recovered from the death of Osama Bin-Laden last year, and that U.S. forces and American allies had the group on run in Afghanistan, Yemen, and other places.
Earlier Monday, Al Qaeda took responsibility for an attack in Iraq in which dozens of people were killed as bombs went off in 11 cities throughout the country. In a statement, the group said that the attack was in response to a death sentence imposed by an Iraqi court on Vice-President Tariq al-Hashemi. At least 92 people were killed in the attacks.
