Escalation in PA Economic Protest

Media in the Palestinian Authority reported, Monday, that youths blocked streets with rocks, burned tires and forced store owners to close in protest of rising prices. Calls continued for the resignation of Salam Fayyad as prime minister, as did a general strike by public transportation and truck drivers over the price of fuel, which is preventing workers from getting to work and students from getting to school.

PA authorities are concerned the protesters will take over the streets and security forces will lose control. Social organizations have called on the demonstrators not to damage public institutions or government offices.
