Amos Ya'akov, commander of police forces in Judea and Samaria, said that the officer who was run down and killed at the Oranim checkpoint Sunday morning was targeted by the driver of the vehicle, which was carrying illegal PA workers into Israel. Speaking to reporters, he said that the vehicle broke through an IDF checkpoint. Soldiers tried to stop the vehicle, and the officer who was killed attempted to block the vehicle's progress by getting in its path. In response the vehicle picked up speed and ran over the officer, he said.
The officer was very seriously injured, and was treated on the spot by Igud Hatzalah rescue workers. He was taken to a hospital in Petach Tikvah for further treatment. The officer subsequently died of his wounds in the hospital.
