Former chief of staff Gabi Ashkenazi of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said, Friday, that "The general staff and the one who heads it cannot not be in talks with the political echelon on the possibility of war. The chief of staff must understand the interface with the political echelon from where the initiative for war must come. The military leadership must be involved and make recommendations. It has an effect on the declaration of war."
Speaking at a seminar on the 2008-2009 Operation Cast Lead in Gaza, Ashkenazi said, "I would recommend that [Chief of Staff Benny] Gantz do this in a thorough way. In future wars, we will need good intelligence because the IDF has the deadliest firepower in the Middle East."
