NIS 875,000 for Family of Abandoned PA Car Thief

The state will pay 875,000 shekels to the family of a car thief from the Palestinian Authority who died of dehydration after he was left by police at the side of a Jerusalem-area road without food or water in 2008.

The payment is part of a compromise settlement in a suit filed by the family of Omar Abu-Jariban, who was injured when he flipped the car he stole. He spent two weeks in the hospital, at which point he was released for lack of hospital or jail space. Two police officers received 30-month sentences for manslaughter in the case.
