A man fired a gun during a midnight victory rally for Pauline Marois of Parti Quebecois, hitting two people and killing one of them. Marois was whisked off stage, but returned shortly to ask the crowd to disperse peacefully.
Police said the shooter was a 50-year-old man. The suspect reportedly shouted, “The English are waking up!” as he was taken into custody.
Parti Quebecois favors separatism for the province of Quebec. The group has upset local Jews with a plan to ban religious headgear.
