United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has called on the international community to avoid selling weapons to either side in the conflict in Syria. "Those who provide arms to either side are only contributing to further misery - and the risk of unintended consequences as the fighting intensifies and spreads," he said.

Ban accused both the Assad regime and rebel armies of violating human rights.
