Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said, Sunday, that the Beijing government is very worried about the deteriorating situation in Syria and is following the humanitarian situation there with concern. Yang told new United Nations envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, that the only solution to the crisis is political dialogue. Yang also called for recognition of Syrian sovereignty and not to force an agreement on it or intervene militarily.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, Sunday, that it was naive of Arab countries and the West to think that the forces loyal to the government of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad would withdraw first from embattled Syrian cities and only then would rebel forces leave. Speaking to students in Moscow, Lavrov said that Russia is not taking sides and that its position was based on the reality of the situation.
