The Justice Department of the United States is investigating if Chinese banks traded with Iran in violation of U.S. sanctions against the Tehran government's nuclear development program, according to a Thursday report by the New York Times.

The newspaper said the probe is an extension of the investigation against British banks Standard Chartered and HSBC.
