UNIFIL Mandate Extended

The Security Council of the United Nations decided, unanimously, Thursday evening, to renew the mandate of its Interim Force in Lebananon (UNIFIL), established in 1978 and enhanced following Hizbullah's war against Israel in 2006.

The Security Council resolution condemned what it called attempts to threaten Lebanese security and stability, emphasizing that acts of intimidation will not prevent UNIFIL from its mission of assisting the Lebanese government in exercising authority in the southern part of the country, near the Israeli border. UN forces have been targeted in roadside bombings and other attacks in the area in recent years.
