Hareidi Wife Arrested for Draft Dodging

A married hareidi woman has been arrested for draft dodging in a move that may exacerbate tensions between the IDF and the hareidi-religious community. The woman, a member of the Chabad Chassidic community, approached IDF police Monday to determine why she had been prevented from leaving the country.

Military police told her she was wanted for draft evasion, arrested her, and kept her in jail overnight. The woman would have been eligible for an exemption due to her hareidi upbringing and lifestyle, but apparently failed to apply for one.

MKs Michael Ben-Ari (National Union) and Uri Maklev (United Torah Judaism) intervened on the woman’s behalf.
