Minister of the Interior Eli Yishai, of the Sephardi-hareidi Shas party, has ordered his ministry to block funds to municipalities where hareidi schools are accused of discriminating against Sephardi applicants. A report Wednesday in Yediot Aharonot found that dozens of young Sephardi women were rejected from hareidi schools in cities including Modiin Illit, Elad and Bnei Brak.
“State money must not be used for profiteering on the back of Israeli students. Racism must be wiped out,” Yishai declared. He added, “We will fight for that with all the tools at our disposal.”
