Report: Rabbi Elyashiv Fought School Discrimination

Rabbi Chaim Cohen, who was close to deceased Lithuanian religious leader Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, said Wednesday that Rabbi Elyashiv vigorously opposed discrimination in schools based on ethnic background. “I am ‘happy’ to see Rabbi Shteinman working from morning to night to get young women accepted to seminaries, it reminds me of what Rabbi Elyashiv would do in the month of Elul,” he told Kol B’Rama radio.

Rabbi Cohen expressed disgust at the situation, saying, “This is what the leaders of the generation have to get involved with in Elul?”

Several hareidi schools have been criticized for rejecting a disproportionate number of young women from a Sephardi (Middle Eastern Jewish) background.
