A report from Syria said that the head of intelligence of the country's air force, General Jamal Hassan, was killed Saturday in a targeted assassination as he worked in his office in Damascus. Syrian officials have not confirmed the story.

Human rights officials said that one day death toll in Syria on Saturday was 440, by far the highest number killed since the revolt against Bashar al-Assad began earlier this year.
