Russia: Syria Cooperating to Secure Chemical Weapons

Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Gnady Gatilov said, Thursday evening, that the government of Syria was working closely with the administration in Moscow to ensure that its stockpile of chemical weapons does not fall into the wrong hands. Interviewed by the Associated Press, Gatilov said that the regime of President Bashar Al-Assad promised not to use those weapons in the current fight against opposition forces.

Gatilov said, "We received very clear guarantees from Damascus that the government will do all it can to ensure the safety of chemical arsenals. The weapons will remain in their current storage place."
