Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has called on the International Quartet to promote elections in the Palestinian Authority, AFP reports. Those living under PA rule were supposed to vote for a new Chairman years ago, but current Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has delayed the vote, citing the Hamas takeover of Gaza.
Lieberman accused Abbas of being “apparently uninterested or unable… to reach an agreement” with Israel. He expressed hope that new PA leaders would take a more realistic approach.
His statements angered PA leaders, who called on Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to distance himself from Lieberman’s views.
