Police Compensation to Soccer Fan Canceled

A Haifa court has canceled a ruling ordering the Israel Police to compensate a soccer fan injured in a post-game scuffle, News1 reports. The female fan was hit by a rock thrown shortly after police left the stadium at 11 p.m., after the game.

A lower court said police were negligent in not continuing to provide security as fans waited at bus stops despite knowing that the 2007 match between Beitar Jerusalem and Maccabi Haifa was “a very sensitive game.” District Court judge Oded Gershon disagreed, and said that while the decision to secure bus stops looked logical in retrospect, the expectation was unrealistic given the police force’s limited means.
