The City of Ramat Gan cannot condition the granting of business licenses to the AM: PM supermarket chain closing on its closing its branches on Shabbat and holidays, the District Court in Tel Aviv ruled on Tuesday. The Court also imposed a heavy fine on the city for what it termed
“improper arguments.”

In its ruling, the Court sharply criticized the city for asking the chain to close on Shabbat and forced it to issue a business license to the supermarkets. The city was fined 50 thousand shekels for what the Court termed “discriminatory behavior” towards the chain.
