Japanese scientists have reported finding large numbers of butterflies in the Fukushima region that had mutated. The region suffered a radiation leak in 2011 following a massive earthquake and tsunami.
The radiation was responsible for “physiological and genetic damage” to the pale grass blue butterflies, researchers said. They said the findings were unexpected, as insects were believed to be highly resistant to radiation.
