With the expiration of the Tal Law, secular groups on Tuesday filed a petition with the High Court demanding that funding for all post-high school yeshivas be suspended, until it could be determined if any of the students in the yeshivas were draft dodgers. The petition said that it would be unworthy for the state to fund institutions that abet such behavior, and asks the Finance Minister to suspend all payments to the yeshivas, where some 54,000 people young Israelis study.
Commenting on the lawsuit, a spokesperson for Hareidi party United Torah Judaism said that this “latest attempt to prevent the expansion of the yeshivas will not succeed.”
