China expressed regret, Friday, at Thursday's resignation of Kofi Annan as United Nations and Arab League to try to stop fighting between government and opposition forces in Syria. A Chinese Foreign Ministry statement said, "We understand the difficulty of Annan's mediation work, and respect his decision."

China and Russia blocked a number of U.N. Security Council decisions which took a strong stand against the government of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.
