Vice President Varda Elsheikh of the Tel Aviv District Court resigned, Thursday evening, as chairwoman of a national group representing judges.
While the resignation came against the backdrop of allegations that Judge El-sheikh tampered with trial transcripts, she wrote, in mail sent to members of the group, that she had served seven years in the position, noting that she wanted to retire in December but stayed on under pressure from her peers. She said she finished taking care of what she called pressing matters during a judicial sabbatical which started in April. Her current term expires in 16 months. The resignatio becomes effective August 15, with elections to follow in September, in accordance with the group's rules.
