Knesset Committee to Consider Mofaz Request Tuesday

The Knesset House Committee is scheduled, Tuesday, to discuss a request by Chairman Shaul Mofaz of the Kadima party to designate four of the party's Knesset members as "resigning" because of their reported move to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's Likud party. The designation would restrict their activities, pending new Knesset elections, and is not expected to be approved.

Netanyahu is expected to continue efforts to draw seven Knesset members from Kadima to satisfy statutory requirements on transfer from one party to another or formation of a new faction,  with an eye to protecting the ruling coalition from the threat of new elections posed by the potential defection of smaller parties. Former member of Knesset Chaim Ramon is also attempting to put together a list of seven defectors from Kadima to form a new party.
