Automatic Border Cellular Roaming to be Blocked

The Ministry of Communications ordered cellular telephone companies, Sunday, to block automatic international roaming services in border areas, so that cell phone users in those areas will go to the neighboring country's network only if they ask to do so. Currently, in areas next to Jordan and Egypt, the Jordanian and Egyptian cellular companies automatically become the available service, resulting in international charges on calls between Israeli numbers.

The ministry determined that as long as it's possible to have a conversation with a reasonable level of quality, the Israeli company must handle the call. The change will take effect within three months, according to Israel Defense Forces Radio
