Shas Withdraws Hesder Appeal after Hershkowitz Attack

Science Minister Daniel Hershkowitz attacked ministers from the Shas Sephardic hareidi-religious party at Sunday's cabinet meeting, after they appealed against a bill intended to govern religious Zionist yeshivas and those of the Hesder movement, which combine religious studies and military service. The measure was needed in light of the expiration of the Tal Law, which gives deferments to yeshiva students, on August 1st.

Minister without portfolio Meshulam Nahari said the law discriminates among those who study Torah, to which Hershkowitz responded, "The law distinguishes between Torah scholars who serve in the army and Torah scholars who don't serve in the army." After some discussion, the Shas ministers withdrew the appeal, given that the majority of the ministers seemed to be of the same position as Minister Hershkowitz.
