The Ministerial Law Committee on Sunday authorized for its first reading a law authored by MK Shelly Yechimovich (Labor), MK Carmel Shama-Hacohen (Likud), and MK Nachman Shai (Kadima), that would extend funding for the broadcasting of local news by two years. The programs are broadcast on regional radio stations and public access cable channels.
MK Shai said that “the local news is very important. It builds and strengthens the communal sense of belonging in the center of the country and in the periphery. It also contributes to social, economic, and and cultural activity, and prepares the next generation of the leaders of the electronic media.”
