Speaking Saturday night, social activist Dafni Leef said that the government needed to begin paying more attention to the needs of Israelis, in the wake of the self-immolation of a protester at a protest in Tel Aviv. “This was the extreme act of a man who was totally destroyed by the cruelty of the system,” Leef said. She urged the government to “take responsibility and ensure that tragedies like this do not repeat themselves.”
Leef said that it was “economic uncertainty, on the one hand, and a failure of the social welfare system on the other that drives people to fear that they will be turned into the streets, into poverty and hunger. This is the responsibility of the government, which is failing to take care of its citizens,” she added.
