It was disclosed, Friday morning, that a Border Guard unit killed one person and wounded another, Thursday evening, during an apparent drug-smuggling incident on the Egyptian border. The force saw two people cross the border and carried out standard arrest procedures, during which the suspects were shot when they failed to respond to the soldiers' calls to halt. Medical personnel declared one of the suspects dead at the scene and evacuated the other to Soroka Hospital in Be'er Sheva'.
Chief of staff Benny Gantz said, at the scene, "The operational problem is one kind of problem, but a more significant problem is what happens in the Sinai, the staging ground, a steadily emerging terrorist base. We expect the Egyptians to exercise their sovereignty [on the area]."
