Citizens of the Ivory Coast who jumped the border into Israel can apply for a $500 grant from the Israeli government if they voluntarily leave Israel within a certain period of time. The plan was formulated by Interior Minister Eli Yishai. In addition, $100 will be given for each child. Previously most illegal migrants have been from Eritrea and Sudan.
Minister Yishai decried the phenomenon of such people roaming the streets of low income neighborhoods such as South Tel Aviv as homeless migrants. He said he hoped to "restore the sense of security to residents of the neighborhoods," while still maintaining a sense of dignity to the foreigners to be repatriated.
