Knesset speaker Reuven Rivlin expressed opposition Wednesday to a Prison Services decision to let Yigal Amir out of isolation. The Knesset discussed the matter following an appeal from MK Nachman Shai (Kadima).

Minister of Internal Security Yitzchak Aharonovich explained that Amir, who murdered then-Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin, had formerly been held in isolation for security reasons, but that it was believed that those security concerns were no longer relevant.

“The last time a prime minister was murdered in Israel was 2,500 years ago,” Rivlin said. “I’m not sure that the factors important to the police are the only factors that need to be weighed here.”
