MK Amsalem: Enlistment Would be Good for Hareidim

Enlisting in the IDF would be good for many hareidi-religious yeshiva students, MK Chaim Amsalem said Tuesday, speaking to Arutz Sheva. “There is no obligation to sit and learn in yeshiva in poverty and want, and in such a situation the learning is not serious,” he said.

“Every eighteen-year-old young man needs to give something to the state,” Amsalem said. Not all need to enlist in the army, he added, “There are those whose Torah learning is their service, people whose souls yearn for Torah and who have nothing else, people who make do with little and learn Torah constantly, they will be the leaders of the generation and need to stay in yeshiva.”
