Shuli Muallem to Vie for Spot on Bayit Yehudi List

Shuli Muallem, who leads efforts on behalf of Israel's military widows and orphans, announced her candidacy, Monday, for a spot on the Knesset ballot of the Bayit Yehudi (Jewish Home-New National Religious Party). Muallem, who has since remarried, lost her husband, Lieutenant Colonel Moshe Muallem in a helicopter disaster in 1997.

Muallem called on all candidates "to work together to build a strong national religious party with influence to be an alternative for all those who found no other political home." She chose not to express support at this time for any particular candidate for chairman but called for unity and an end to factionalism, saying it would be better not to have elections for chairman and suggesting that the candidates decide among themselves or use a rotation system as the hareidi parties do.
