Case Against Former Intelligence Chief to Close

The State Prosecutor's Office announced, Monday, that it is closing the file against former military intelligence chief Eli Zeira, who was suspected of revealing the identity of Ashraf Marwan as an Israeli agent who warned Israel of Egypt's intentions before the Yom Kippur War. The state cited Zeira's advanced age and the consequences of prosecuting someone who held such a sensitive position.

Former Mossad intelligence chief Zvi Zamir filed a lawsuit against Zeira as a result accusations between the two about the Marwan disclosure, which harmed Israel's security and its ability to recruit agents. Marwan fell to his death from the porch of a London hotel room in 2007. His Egyptian state funeral was seen as evidence of his being an Egyptian agent who was deceived by Israel and fueled claims that it was the Mossad which eliminated him.
