3 Israelis in Youth Beekeeping Competition in Prague

Israel's Honey Council has selected 16-year-old Shanir Ophir from Kibbutz 'Ein Charod and 15-year-olds Shachar Horesh of Carcur and Bat-Achat Talia Ashuri of Tzerufa to represent the country at a beekeeping competition for youth, starting Monday in Prague. Honey Council chief Herzl Avidor called this a critical time for the industry, given the disappearing bee problem or colony collapse disorder. He said one of the purposes of the competition is to increase public awareness of the problem and to pool resources to fight it, noting that "the bee is the primary pollinater of agricultural plants and so the danger is real, although most of the public is not aware of it."
