Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu told a number of coalition party leaders, Monday evening, that he intends to introduce a bill that will require "civilian service" for anyone who does not do regular service in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), according to a Tuesday-morning report by IDF Radio. The proposal will cover Arabs and hareidi-religious Jews on the same basis.
Netanyahu spoke with Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Lieberman, Eli Yishai of Shas and Daniel Hershkowitz of Bayit Yehudi, as well as with Ya'akov Litzman and Moshe Gafni of United Torah Judaism. During the day, he is expected to meet with Atzma'ut party leader Ehud Barak. Kadima, however, defined Netanyahu's proposal as a "deception" and associates of Kadima chairman Shaul Mofaz told the station that he feels that Netanyahu tricked him.
