The Palestinian Authority tried, Monday, to minimize the importance of a meeting between Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz, as well as the announcement, Sunday, that the meeting would be cancelled. Abbas advisor Nimer Hamad said the PA stressed, two days before the announcement that it was not certain that the meeting would take place, and that no time or place had been determined.
Before the cancellation was announced, there were two days of demonstrations in Ramallah against the meeting. A Youtube video shows women labeling the meeting as "shameful" and calling for the downfall of the "military regime" in the PA, according to the PA's SPA news agency. There was also a call for PA authorities to issue an arrest warrant for Mofaz, charging him with "war crimes against the Palestinian people". The demonstration was dispersed. Five journalists and activists were arrested and others were beaten.
