Expanded sanctions by European countries against Iran are set to go into effect Sunday. The sanctions will ban nearly all imports of oil from Iran, and European companies will no longer be allowed to insure Iranian oil ships.
A report in Yisrael Hayom Sunday said that the Iranians were not planning to back down, and instead would try to circumvent the sanctions. Numerous Iranian ships were being outfitted with flags from other countries, in order to prevent them from being boarded by inspectors. Iran tried this in the past as well, changing the Persian names of ships and renaming them with English names when doing business with the Iranian merchant marine was banned. Those ships also flew flags of foreign countries, most notably Malta, Cyprus and Hong Kong.
