Netanyahu, Mofaz to Discuss Tal Law Alternatives

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will meet with Chairman Shaul Mofaz of the Kadima party to discuss alternatives to the Tal Law on hareidi-religious recruitment to the Israel Defense Forces, which expires at midnight, Saturday evening, following a Supreme Court decision to invalidate the law. The alternatives are being developed by a Committee on the Equal Burden of Service, headed by Kadima Member of Knesset Yochanan Plesner, which is trying to increase hareidi involvement in military and civilian service.

Netanyahu is seeking to make sure that Israeli Arabs are integrated into civilian service, following word that the committee has set a target of absorbing 6,000 Arabs into volunteer civilian service but won't fine Arabs for not taking part. Those intentions led, Thursday, to the Yisrael Beytenu and Bayit Yehudi parties resigning from the committee.
