A major prayer rally will be held Monday morning in Jerusalem, in which participants will pray for the “destruction of the edict” that the government plans to issue requiring most Hareidi Jewish yeshiva students to server in the IDF. According to reports, a committee discussing a replacement of the expiring Tal Law, which provided tens of thousands of exemptions for Yeshiva students, will place a strict limit on the number of students who will be permitted to receive an exemption for yeshiva study.
The prayer rally is being organized by a diverse group of representatives from the Lithuanian Yeshiva world, and the Hassidic community. One of the major organizers is the Eidah Hachareidit, which, in general, shies away from mass protests. In this case, however, the group decided to get involved because of the “seriousness” of the situation, an official said. Organizers issued calls to all members of the Hareidi community to participate, saying that “one must be prepared to give up one's life and not compromise on even one Jew” to be removed from Yeshiva and sent to the army.
