Some 85 people were arrested on Saturday night as groups attempted to revive social protest movements from last summer. The protests took place in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv, in violation of police orders. Protesters in recent days have tried setting up tents in various areas, as they did last summer, as part of protests demanding social justice. Police have broken up those protests as well.
Speaking to reporters Saturday night, Tel Aviv police officials said that Saturday night's protest in Rabin Square by protesters demanding social justice was one of the worst in the city's history. A large group of protesters closed off Ibn Gvirol Street in Tel Aviv, and threw rocks and stones at banks and other businesses. “We tried to avoid using force against them and giving them space, even though it was an illegal protest, but they had made up their mind to fight with police in order to get a higher 'rating' in media coverage. All the red lines were crossed.” The officials said that they would continue supporting thr right of protesters to demonstrate legally, but prevent future disturbances of the type that occurred Saturday night.
