U.S. intelligence officials estimated on Tuesday that the latest wave of defections of officers from the Syrian army does not indicate that the Assad regime is in danger of collapse.

According to the officials, most troops remain loyal to Assad in part because the regime in Damascus continues to pay their salaries regularly. They added that the Syrian opposition forces are scattered and disorganized, and therefore cannot effectively attack.
