Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz told the committee on increasing hareidi-religious and Arab service to the state, Sunday, "The principle of equality - one law for everybody - is a basic principle and this issue must be before the eyes of the members of the committee." Regarding the Arabs, he said, "The possibilities for their integration into military service will be limited and therefore wer need to open civil service before them, such as internal policing in Arab localities, the Homefront command, hospitals and the like."
The former chief of staff and defense minister stressed, "The state must have a way of expressing itself and compensating those who serve in the regular and reserve forces, with emphasis on combat unit. In the end, the debate will be with the Treasury. Each regular battalion replaces 18-19 reservist battalions per year so there is also much saving from a budget perspective. This connection will give us the possibility of shortening [an individual's] service."
