Shula Zaken has been sentenced to four months of community service for fraud and breach of trust. Zaken was the former bureau chief for then-Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, and used her position to advance her brother’s business interests in what was dubbed the Tax Authority Affair.
Judge Chaim Li-Ran said Zaken’s behavior was immoral, but explained, “The punishment is supposed to increase according to a person’s status as a public servant. The punishment given to an office head is not that given to a senior minister.” Ultimately, Zaken was “a secretary,” he said, and so would be given a much lighter punishment than more senior accomplices.
