Special Knesset Session for Chess Champ Boris Gelfand

Member of Knesset Danny Danon, who serves as Chairman of the Immigration and Absorption Committee is scheduled to hold a special Knesset session to honor world chess champion, Boris Gelfand. The session will be held on Wednesday, Gelfand came in second place in the World Chess Championship after 12 close final games followed by 4 special tie breaker games. He lost by losing just one game to the current world champion who is from India.

MK Danon stated, "Boris is a role model for all Israelis and symbolizes the power of the Jewish people perfectly. It is a remarkable achievement against all odds."

MK Danon said that the discussion will deal with the extraordinary achievements of Gelfand in the world of chess, taking into consideration the development of excellence among new immigrants. "The Jewish people are from various communities around the world, each having advantages and qualities. The State of Israel encourages excellence among new immigrants,” Danon stated.

Although Gelfand came in second place, he will still take home $1 million. The first prize winner received $1.5 million. Gelfand was born in Belarus and made aliyah to Israel in 1998.
